As of this writing, the incident remains under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest Broke Nut was behaving like a testosterone-driven, thrill-seeking idiot.

Witnesses report that he repeatedly failed to look before jibing, treated other river users as moving obstacles, and regarded an approaching commercial barge less as a navigational hazard and more as an exciting source of free waves.

Cracked Clam attempted to intervene, first reminding Broke Nut to check his surroundings before changing direction and later specifically warning him about the approaching barge. Broke Nut acknowledged the warning, assessed the several-thousand-ton vessel, and reportedly responded, “Aww, yeah, I gotta hit that bow wake!”

Investigators believe this statement may prove important in determining whether the incident resulted from poor visibility, poor judgment, or Broke Nut simply being Broke Nut.

Moments later, Broke Nut learned an important principle of Columbia River navigation: the barge does not care how good you think your jibe is.

Cracked Clam’s preliminary findings are considerably less complicated: Look before you jibe. Keep your head on a swivel. Stay well clear of commercial traffic. And if your plan involves making a barge move out of your way, you do not have a plan.

Broke Nut survived the incident with his usual assortment of dents, cracks, and newfound wisdom. When asked whether he had learned anything, he reportedly replied:

“Yeah. That bow wake was totally worth it.”

The investigation remains open.
